A sample answer mentioning nftables
Prompt: Best firewall software · ChatGPT · 2026-09-09
If you mean firewall software for a personal computer, my picks depend on the OS:
- Windows — Microsoft Defender Firewall: Best choice for most people. It’s built into Windows 10/11, filters both inbound and outbound traffic, and supports advanced rules. Microsoft Support Microsoft Learn
- Windows — Portmaster: Best if you want more control and visibility over which applications connect to the internet.
- Windows — TinyWall: Good lightweight option if you want a simpler interface and minimal resource usage.
- macOS — LuLu: My top free choice. It’s open-source and specifically monitors/block unauthorized outgoing connections, complementing Apple's built-in firewall. The Objective-See Foundation The Objective-See Foundation
- Linux — nftables/firewalld: Best for advanced users and servers; UFW is easier for Ubuntu/Debian users. PeopleAreGeek
My overall recommendation
Windows 11: Stick with Microsoft Defender Firewall unless you specifically need per-application outbound-control and detailed connection monitoring. Microsoft's firewall is already integrated into the OS and doesn't require another security suite. Microsoft Support
Mac: LuLu + the built-in macOS firewall is an excellent free combination. The Objective-See Foundation
If you tell me Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux, I can give you the best 3 options (free and paid), including which one I'd personally install.
